"The Bird That Drinks Tears," a fantasy novel series by Lee Yeong-do, has set a new record for foreign exports of Korean books, its publisher said Monday.

이영도가 지은 판타지 소설 시리즈 "눈물 마시는 새"가 한국 서적계 해외 수출의 신기록을 새웠다고 출판사는 월요일에 말했다.

The four-part series has recently been sold to a European publisher at about 300 million won ($235,997) in advance royalty payment for the right to publish it, Minumsa said, without specifying the European publisher.

이 4부작 시리즈는 최근 유럽계 출판사에 사전 판권을 약 3억에 팔았고 유럽 출판사를 특정하지는 않았다고 미음사는 말했다.

 

"Advance royalty payment" is a royalty paid in advance to writers when signing a publishing contract. The 300 million won is the highest amount for any Korean book exported to a single country.

"사전 로열티 지불"은 저자가 출판 계약에 사일할 때 사전에 지불하는 로열티다. 3억원은 단일 국가에 한국 책 출판 중 가장 높은 금액이다.

The previous record was set when Kim Soo-hyun's essay "Comfortably Without Trying Too Hard" was exported to Japan at about 200 million won in 2020.

이전에 가장 높은 기록은 김수현의 에세이 "Comfortably Without Trying Too Hard" (너무 열심히하지 않고 편하게?)가 2022년 약 2억에 일본으로 수출될 때였다.

Lee has already received more than 600 million won in advance royalty payment for the overseas rights to publish the book from publishers in 12 countries, including the United States, Britain, Germany, Poland, Italy, the Netherlands and Ukraine, according to the publisher.

출판사에 따르면 이미 이씨(이영도 작가)는 미국, 영국, 독일, 폴란드, 이탈리아, 네덜란드, 우크라이나를 포함하는 12개 국가들의 출판사로부터 해외 출판권으로 사전 로열티 지불을 6억원 이상 받았다고 한다.

The book's translations were already published in Russia and Taiwan, and its English translation will be published by HarperCollins Publishers, one of the world's leading English-language publishers.

책의 번역본은 이미 러시아와 타이완에 출판됐고 영문 번역본은 세계 최고의 영어 출판사 중 하나인 HarPerCollins Publishers에 의해 출판될 예정이다.

First published in Korea by The Golden Bough, an associate company of Minumsa, in 2003, "The Bird That Drinks Tears" depicts a universe with dominantly Korean fantasy elements, such as "goblin," the Korean wrestling of "ssireum," folk game of "yutnori" and floor heating system of "ondol." In Korea, the novel has sold over 600,000 copies. (Yonhap)

2003년에 미음사의 관계사인 한국의 The Golden Bough에서 최초로 출판됐고 "눈물 마시는 새"는 도깨비, 한국 레슬링인 씨름, 포커 게임과 같은 윳놀이 그리고 바닥 온열 시스템인 온돌과 같은 우수한 한국의 판타지 요소들과 함께 세계관을 묘사한다. 한국에서 이 소설은 60만부 이상 팔렸다.
